Marcello graduated from the University of Leicester in 1983 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Chemistry-with-Biochemistry and obtained his PhD from the University of Glasgow in 1991. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Molecular Microbiology and has a longstanding interest in the development of improved molecular diagnostic tests for identifying microorganisms in clinical specimens.
In particular, his interests lie in the identification of uncultivable and novel bacteria using 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology. This has been applied to the detection of bacteria in both oral and non-oral diseases. His research interests also include the role of oral bacteria in systemic infections, in particular heart disease, prosthetic joint infections and arthritis.
The major focus of his current research is the aetiopathogenesis of oral diseases in animals, including feline chronic gingivostomatitis, canine periodontal disease, equine periodontal disease and ovine ‘broken mouth’ periodontitis. His is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed papers.
