For those that are able to attend IADR this year we would like to highlight three key BSODR sessions for your diary!

Graham Embery Lecture

Speaker: Professor Rachel Waddington.

Title: Power to the extracellular matrix in dental tissues!

Venue/time: 27th June, 11 am – 12 noon, Room 117

Rachel Waddington obtained her PhD at the School of Dentistry, University of Liverpool, in 1988, supervised by Graham Embery. During this time, she developed her research interest in understanding the behaviour of the extracellular matrix in mineralized tissue, initially in disease conditions and later as part of tissue repair. She moved with Graham to the School of Dentistry, University of Wales College of Medicine (now Cardiff University) for her postdoctoral studies, became a lecturer in 1989, and full Professor in 2011, all in the same School. During this time, she has supervised over 25 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. These efforts have resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications, with research investigating the role of non-collagenous proteins in regulating collagen fibrillogenesis and the deposition of minerals in osseous tissues; their fate during disease situations such as periodontal disease and fluorosis; and more recently, the role of extracellular components and extracellular vesicles in regulating the fate of mesenchymal progenitor cells for tissue regeneration. Rachel has been a member of the BSODR / IADR since 1985 and was honoured to serve as the first female President of the Society from 2021 to 2023.
