Congratulations and welcome to our new President of the British Society of Oral & Dental Research (2025-27), Professor Avijit Banerjee. He took over the reins from Prof Simon Whawell at the BSODR Annual Business Meeting held at the IADR conference in Barcelona, June 2025.

Avijit is Professor of Cariology & Operative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS), King’s College London, UK and Hon. Consultant, Restorative Dentistry, Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospitals Foundation Trust, London, UK.  He currently holds three international honorary chairs as well as being a member of the Board of Trustees, Oral & Dental Research Trust (ODRT, UK). He concurrently holds the post of Hon. Consultant Advisor to the Office of the Chief Dental Officer, England and is the Editor-in-Chief of the British Dental Journal Portfolio (Springer Nature and BDA).

In 2022, he was awarded the prestigious William H Bowen Caries Research Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) in recognition of his global scientific and clinical research impact in cariology & minimally invasive operative dentistry over the last 25 years.

In 2024, the UK British Dental Association bestowed upon him the John Tomes Medal, one of its most esteemed professional accolades, to honour his clinical academic and scientific services and achievements to the profession and the BDA.

“It is a great honour and privilege to be elected to the presidency of the premier research society in the UK oral & dental profession. Fundamental, clinical, translational and social science research all underpin the continuous development of best clinical practice and care to help our patients, whilst discovery science is an enthralling, exciting pathway for established and early career researchers alike. I would like to say a huge thankyou to Simon for the concerted effort and great job he has done over the last two years at the helm of the BSODR and I’m sure he, like me, would also sing the praises of the amazing BSODR management committee who work tirelessly to ensure the BSODR stays at the forefront of oral & dental research in the UK. A very tough act to follow, but I will do my best working with the committee, to champion oral & dental research across the oral healthcare team in the UK and beyond!”
